are they facts or fallacies?
Exercise Myths are usually only misconceptions or misunderstandings of facts. People tend to look at things from their own perspective or read things into what they have heard. This can sometimes lead to fallacies that will make a person act or react in a certain way.
I have been interested and worked in the Fitness Industry over many years and have heard and read different views and opinions on Exercise. Overall from the many courses I have studied and the other Health Professionals that I have come in contact with, show common sense and knowledge based on solid facts. But to my surprise sometimes, someone will do or say something related to Exercise, Health or Fitness that is Totally Inaccurate.
Don’t be put off in participating in Exercise because of these misconceptions. Exercise Myths are not based on any form of fact and are only popular belief that has grown and appeared to gain credibility over time.
Here are just a few Exercise Myths that I feel should be cleared up to give you peace of mind and assurance that you can participate in a program that has your best interests at heart.
SEVEN EXERCISE MYTHS EXPLAINED.
Lets clear the air on the following points,
Some advertisers would lead you to believe, that by using their patented fitness contraption, for only a few times a week, in the comfort of your home, in front of your TV, you will be able to lose all the weight from wherever you desire. This is a load of rubbish! You cannot dictate to your body that if you persistently exercise one part (spot) of your body that the fat deposits there will reduce or disappear. Your body will use its body fat stores as fuel from all over. And if you consume too many calories, your body will replace the excess all over. If you want more information, take a look at how your
Body Weight Changes.
MUSCLE CAN TURN INTO FAT.
This is an impossibility. Lean Muscle Mass and Body Fat stores are totally different. One does not and cannot turn into the other. This myth comes from the notion that when people stop exercising their muscle tone or bulk decreases and they gain weight (body fat). This is due to the fact that when the exercising stopped the trained muscles lose their tone and definition. And unless there is an adjustment to the amount of extra calories consumed the body converts these into excess fat and the person gains weight.
BY PERFORMING RESISTANCE WORKOUTS YOUR MUSCLES WILL "BULK UP".
If only it was that easy. Unfortunately I have had many women say to me that they did not want to participate in any resistance routines for the fear of turning into a female Schwarzenegger. Firstly women do not have enough testosterone for huge muscle growth. Resistance exercises performed correctly, are excellent for women as it develops strength and tones muscle. It assists in increasing bone density, which can offset the development of osteoporosis.
DON'T DO ANY RESISTANCE WORKOUTS IF YOU WHAT TO LOSE WEIGHT.
If you only perform resistance or strength exercise you will not lose weight. You probably will gain weight because of increased muscle mass and muscle weighs more than fat (for equivalent amounts). Aerobic Exercise is the key that targets
. But ideally a combination of the two is necessary for overall physical well-being. The Resistance Workout will tone and strengthen muscles, which in turn use more calories. Add in Aerobic Workouts, that you enjoy and you will optimize your capacity to lose excess body fat.
YOU MUST WORKOUT AT A HIGH INTENSITY OR NOT AT ALL.
This myth can stop people from even thinking about Exercise. Research has shown (and common sense would dictate) that any Exercise is better that none at all. Walking or even Domestic duties around the home for at least an hour, 3 times a week is beneficial to your health and well-being. Remember any Exercise at all is much better than no Exercise.
ONLY ABDOMINAL WORKOUTS WILL FLATTEN YOUR MID SECTION.
Abdominal exercises will strengthen, tone and shape your Mid section (tummy), but the Abdominal Workouts alone will not lessen the amount of excess body fat form that region (Refer back to "Spot Reduction"). You have to perform some type of Aerobic Workout to burn or use calories and target Weight Loss in combination with a Healthy

THAT EXERCISE DOESN'T WORK ON ME.
I have found that this misconception usually comes from the fact that basic Muscle / Body movement and Exercise theory is not fully understood correctly.
Some people can perform a certain movement, thinking that they are targeting a particular Muscle Group. But due to a lack of knowledge or incorrect practices, no results are gained and therefore they will believe that the Exercise does not work for them. This can also increase the likelihood of injury.
